The Johnson Creek Trailhead, affectionately called “The Rock,” is one of the most heavily used spots on the Butler Trail. Previously, there was a stretching area that was renovated by The Trail Conservancy in December 2004 with grants from the Moody Foundation and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, and help from the Parks and Recreation Department. But after reviewing community engagement data collected in 2010, it was clear that the conditions of this heavily used Trail entrance were not meeting the needs of Trail users.
Trailhead Enhancements
In 2010, the Austin firm of Bosse & Associates designed this enhancement for the Johnson Creek Trailhead, which included: installing drinking fountains, adding a stretching area, building retaining walls, upgrading the landscaping, adding native plants to the existing rain garden, and erosion control. In 2012, the Johnson Creek Trailhead received the 2012 Keep Austin Beautiful Best of the Best Award.
Johnson Creek Restroom
Designed by Studio 8 Architects and constructed by Sabre Commercial, the Johnson Creek Restroom filled a high-priority need in this high-usage area. The restroom is constructed of steel and artisanal concrete and is designed to minimize maintenance needs. A one-of-a-kind grand opening, “First Flush” was held on April 25, 2013. The Johnson Creek Restroom won an Associated General Contractors of America – Austin Chapter award in the Building 1 Category (0-$2 Million Ground Up) in 2013.
