The trees and woodlands surrounding the Trail are a unique, natural resource. The Trail Foundation’s Healthy Trees for the Trail (HTFT) program helps protect and improve the tree cover that makes the Trail such a great place to run, walk and bike.
In fall 2006, as part of our HTFT program, The Trail Foundation completed a major tree planting effort on one of the most heavily used sections of the Trail known as Zilker Bluffs—the area on the south side of the Lake just east of MoPac and the Roberta Crenshaw Pedestrian Bridge. This currently sparse section is exposed to the full afternoon sun making it one of the hottest spots on the Trail. As they grow, the new trees will beautify this area and provide much needed shade.
The Zilker Bluffs Tree Grove project will change the face of the Trail for generations to come. The trees we planted will benefit both the environment and Trail users alike. A special thank you goes to Cricket Communications and Texas Realty Capital for their generous underwriting gifts.
