In 2009, the Trail Conservancy identified an area frequently used by Butler Trail users and could be improved for better service. This area, known as “Between the Bridges,” is located on the south side of Lady Bird Lake between the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge and the historic Union Pacific railroad bridge. By connecting Butler Park to the Trail, this gateway area became a more heavily used access point to the Lady Bird Lake area.
To make this area more appealing, we designed and installed a project that included screening the parking lot and beautifying the area. One of the unique features of this project is a serpentine retaining wall that weaves along the Trail and an existing grove of trees. This helps to create a buffer and maintain the continuity of the natural trail experience by blocking the adjacent street, parking lot, and vehicles. Additionally, the project includes a lake overlook and informal seating walls, making it a natural gathering space for Trail goers.
The Silicon Labs Green Team volunteers helped plant 769 perennials along the walls in September 2009. As a result of the improvements, Between the Bridges received the 2009 Keep Austin Beautiful Award –Â Beautification.
