Volunteer
On The Trail

The Trail Conservancy relies on volunteers to complete many ecological restoration projects, events, and tasks to keep the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail on the right trajectory toward improved ecological function. Volunteering with TTC ranges from litter abatement, planting, seeding, invasive species removal, and more.

Our team works with individuals, businesses, corporations, and community groups to complete hands-on Trail improvement projects throughout the year. We also receive grant funding for volunteer activities from the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department as part of its Lady Bird Lake Shoreline Stewardship Program.

Our volunteers are at the core of what we do. And, as we increase our efforts on the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, we rely on the help of our volunteers. You can find all our volunteer options and dates below. Sign up and join us on the Trail today!

Volunteer Days

Our volunteer events are currently on pause, but stay tuned! February events will be posted in January.

Corporate Group Opportunities

Our “Day in the Dirt” program is a great opportunity for corporate group team-building. There is a nominal fee to participate, covering expenses for tools, materials, and staff time. The participation cost varies based on the group size, the volunteer day length, and the day of the week.

Non-Profit or Community Group Partnerships

We also love to partner with other community groups, non-profit organizations, and school groups. If you want to do a volunteer day on the Trail, email us so we can help coordinate!

Community Trail Cleanup

Our Community Trail Cleanup Program is a “do-it-yourself” Trail cleanup opportunity for volunteers who want to:

  • Learn and lead a Trail cleanup event
  • Borrow TTC Trail cleanup supplies (trash grabbers, gloves, trash bags, etc.)
  • Become a TTC Volunteer Lead

We want to empower and prepare future volunteer leaders to host their own volunteer events and provide more opportunities for the community to engage on the Trail.  If you would like to host your own Community Trail Cleanup, email us to schedule!

Volunteer FAQ

TTC provides various volunteer opportunities yearlong, both on and off the Trail. Join us on the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail by picking up trash, spreading native seeds, planting native plants, removing invasive plant species, and spreading mulch. We also need volunteers at events such as Twilight on the Trail and Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run.

You can look at the volunteer calendar linked at the bottom of this page. Volunteer opportunities are posted at the beginning of each month, so please check back regularly. If you cannot attend our scheduled volunteer events, you can host your own through our DIY trash pickup, the “Community Trail Cleanup” Program.

Registration is required for all of our programs through the volunteer management system, GivePulse. Each registration page will have the meeting location, directions, and other important information related to the volunteer event.

Yes, registration is required to volunteer.

Volunteers work at different locations along the 10-mile Trail, so each volunteer needs to register independently and read the information provided on the event registration page.

You can schedule a project for your school, work group, non-profit, youth group, faith group, etc. No experience is necessary. TTC provides all the tools, materials, and training.

Contact volunteer@thetrailconservancy.org for available group projects. Please provide the number of volunteers, dates, and any additional questions or concerns you have. Group projects generally accommodate up to 15 to 20 people. Scheduling a group event takes at least two weeks and depends on your group size, availability, and time of year.

All volunteers must agree to the Liability and Photo Release form on the POINT registration event page for every volunteer event. Volunteers under 18 must have a parent/guardian complete the Volunteer Minor Form (PDF) in addition. Completed Volunteer Minor forms can be emailed to volunteer@thetrailconservancy.org or handed in person on the event day.

We welcome volunteers of all ages to volunteer with The Trail Conservancy. Volunteers under 18 must also have a parent/guardian complete the Volunteer Minor Form.

For youth groups, we require that there is, at minimum, an adult present for every ten youths under the age of 15.

Be prepared to work on the Trail. You should bring/wear:

  • A personal water bottle. We’ll have extra water for refills.
  • Clothes that can get dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required. Pants are recommended.
  • Sun protection, such as a hat and sunscreen

TTC staff will provide all the tools, supplies, gloves, and training. Additionally, TTC will have a  first aid kit on site.

Our volunteer events are rain or shine. Extreme weather events such as >50% chance of inclement weather involving lightning, hail, winds over 40mph, and temperatures under 30 degrees during the event will result in cancellation.

If you are registered for a volunteer event and it is canceled due to weather, you will receive an email notification 24 hours before the event.

If you cannot attend a volunteer event that you register for, please log in to your GivePulse account and cancel your registration.

Please cancel your registration as soon as possible. By canceling your registration, you are opening spots for others and providing our staff to plan accordingly.

TTC Staff leading the volunteer event can sign volunteer hours forms for your school or court-ordered service at the end of the event. Please bring your paperwork with you to the volunteer event.
