SUMMARY:Volunteer on the Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Trail Conservancy relies on volunteers to complete many ecological restoration projects\, events\, and tasks to keep the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail on the right trajectory toward improved ecological function. Volunteering with TTC ranges from litter abatement\, planting\, seeding\, invasive species removal\, and more. \nOur team works with individuals\, businesses\, corporations\, and community groups to complete hands-on Trail improvement projects throughout the year. We also receive grant funding for volunteer activities from the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department as part of its Lady Bird Lake Shoreline Stewardship Program. \nOur volunteers are at the core of what we do. And\, as we increase our efforts on the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail\, we rely on the help of our volunteers. You can find all our volunteer options at the link: https://thetrailconservancy.org/support/volunteer-opportunities/

SUMMARY:"Really Small Museum" - Botanical Wisdom Workshop with Paloma Mayorga
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the year\, TEMPO on the Trail artist Juliet Whitsett will collaborate with artists and organizations to integrate eco-focused art installations into her 2024-2025 Really Small Museum – Eco (RSME) project\, situated at the Holly Trail. \nThrough a series of creative exercises\, we will explore memories attached to plants to create a collection of shared wisdom about the healing power of plants. Participants will contribute to the creation of a zine that will be produced by the artist later this year and will receive a complimentary custom herbal tea blend to take home. \nThis event coincides with Hija de flores / Daughter of flowers\, an installation by local artist Paloma Mayorga composed of floral DNA representations that investigate the concept of botanical wisdom\, or the practice of slowly unearthing bits of inherited knowledge that have been passed down generations of women as tools for healing and survival. \nPaloma Mayorga is an interdisciplinary artist and independent curator born and based in Austin\, TX. Working across photography\, video\, performance\, and installation\, Mayorga often uses her own body as medium to explore movement\, place\, and cultural identity in relation to landscape and ancestral uses of plants. \nThis event is part of the 2024-2025 Really Small Museum – Eco (RSME) TEMPO on the Trail in partnership with The Trail Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk with Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Zierzow and TTC staff\, Jonatan Salinas\, to find birds and observe their behavior on the new section of the Butler Trail\, the Holly Trailhead\, historically part of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitats for many different species of birds. As TTC restores this new section of the trail\, we will see a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk. \nThis bird walk is ideal for beginners\, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend to anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1-2 miles in about 3 hours\, making our way through the Holly Trail and adjacent to Lady Bird Lake to listen to and look for resident birds\, migrants\, and flyovers. The terrain is mostly flat (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks) and there is ADA accessibility at the Holly Trail Overlook.  In winter\, we will take a stop at the Holly Trail overlook section of the trail a bit to watch the waterfowl. \nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. A reminder email will be sent with pertinent details before the field trip. Register here: https://travisaudubon.org/?event=birding-at-lady-bird-lake-with-the-trail-conservancy

SUMMARY:TrailFit Junior: Yoga with Just Keep Livin Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Join TTC and the Just Keep Livin Foundation for a special edition of TrailFit: TrailFit Junior. This community workout for high school-aged kids will feature a yoga session led by ATX Yoga Girl\, Cynthia Aguillón Bernard. \nRegular exercise has been proven to reduce stress\, anxiety\, and depression while boosting self-esteem and brain activity.  In fact\, exercise has many of the same effects on the brain as antidepressant medications because it triggers the release of serotonin (the happy hormone)\, yet 70% of high school students don’t meet the recommended daily amount of physical activity. In the JKL program\, 95% of students get more exercise. \nAbout JKL\nThe Just Keep Livin Foundation was founded by Camila and Matthew McConaughey and is dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future. In keeping with the mindset and goals of j.k. livin\, the foundation has set up fitness and wellness programs in Title 1 high schools where students might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about the body and mind connection.
